The Nerd Tank on East Village Radio

The Nerd Tank

The Nerd Tank is billed on their EVR page as "Darkwave, minimalwave, bleepwave and nerdcore." I don't know what any of those things are, it sounds like good old minimal techno to me. What's great about their show is that they stay away from the popular Kompakt artists, and focus more on Perlon-ish stuff, as well as local artists. From what I can gather, there's a relatively vibrant minimal techno scene here in NYC, and the show seems to play a big role in that community (they often debut new records/remixes from local producers on the air). If you like electronic music that's so subtle it makes you want to take a billion drugs, this shit is right up your alley.

That Jay-Z Stops Rapping (Again)

Dear Hova,

You know I love you. Blueprint 2.0 continues to influence things that I do, as well as things that many other people are doing. Remember the first retirement? The Black Album wasn't bad at all. That had some bangers on it. And then you dropped an unexpected guest verse on Jeezy's "Go Crazy" and everyone was like "Oh shit, young H-O is coming back!" and it was really exciting. But now it seems that you insist on dropping a guest verse for every single Rocafella and Def Jam artist. I was hoping, after the abomination that was Kingdom Come, you would fall back a bit. But you continue to show no signs of slowing. You have ruined an amazing track by Rihanna. "Umbrella" is RnB taken beyond the point of RnB, it's almost synthpop. It's incredible. But every time I listen to it (about 3 times a day), it's all I can do to not fastforward through your flacid excuse of a guest verse. Your options are to either take a step back and resign yourself to running your companies and leaving the rap-spitting to the young bucks, the young jeezy's, the young leeks, and the remaining cavalcade of youngs and lils that are out there, or to step out of your ivory penthouse, reconnect with that Jay from the streets and return to your former rap persona. If you do not reconsider your actions immediately (I fear it may be too late already), everyone is going to hate you as much as they hate Russell Simmons. Neither you nor I want that to happen. With restrained malice,

- Chris

The Brooklyn Kickball League

Brooklyn Kickball

When it gets warm outside, the hipsters start to get restless. Some start bike gangs, some become makeout sluts, others join the kickball league. The league plays every sunday in McCarren Park, and it's way more fun than it should be. Yours truly found his way onto a team called Never Scared, and not only do we boast fly uniforms with intricate purple/teal screen printing, we also created a portable soundsystem to run off of a car battery so that we can have the appropriate theme music when we play. Did I mention that hipsters get restless in the spring time?
